21.3. Issues displaying windows and graphic annomolies especially with external displays
Problem Description
After setting up two monitors, the Shuttleworth application would launch, but no window would appear on screen.
-
The program appeared to run in the background, but the visible window was missing or “off-screen.”
-
The issue recurred each time a new task was performed within Shuttleworth or when logging out of it.
-
The user found that he could temporarily fix it by unplugging and re-plugging the USB-C dock, which would make Shuttleworth reappear — indicating a display or window-position issue linked to the docking setup.
Resolution
After completing the below steps, the user confirmed that the issue appeared resolved and the software was now working correctly.
Could you try these quick steps (should take 5–10 minutes total)?
-
Try it on the primary screen
-
Go to Settings → System → Display and make sure your main screen is set as Primary (tick “Make this my main display”).
-
Press Windows+P → PC screen only, open Shuttleworth, close it, then go back to Windows+P → Extend and open it again.
-
If a window “vanishes”: click Shuttleworth on the taskbar, press Alt+Space → M, tap an arrow key, then move the mouse to bring it back.
-
You can also press Win+Shift+Left/Right to move the window between screens.
-
Match the Scale % on both screens
-
Settings → System → Display → Scale: set both monitors to the same % (e.g., both 100% or both 125%).
-
Sign out/in (or reboot) and try Shuttleworth again (preferably on the Primary screen).
-
Quick cable/port check (important)
-
It’s possible both monitors are currently plugged into the hub. If so, please move one monitor (ideally the one you’ll use for Shuttleworth) to the laptop’s built-in HDMI port, and leave only the other on the HDMI Hub.
-
Then try Shuttleworth again and let us know if that improves things.
-
Simple A/B swap if needed
-
If you already have one on the laptop HDMI and one on the HDMI Hub, swap which screen is on which port and see if Shuttleworth behaves better.
-
Confirm a couple of details for us
-
Are both monitors the same model?
-
Which screen is Primary right now?
-
Which cable goes to laptop HDMI and which to HDMI adapter/hub?
